With what seems like wetter autumn weather patterns this has an impact on the growing of winter crops. Most fields have artificial drainage in place below the soil, however these drains were put in the 1960/70s and are sometimes clogged up or in clay soils sometimes the water cannot get down to the drains.

Waterlogged fields have environmental issues in terms of nutrient run-off and also kill crops off by drowning them out. Therefore it is necessary in the long term plans to start replacing old drains with modern pipes and systems. GPS will allow drains to be place accurately, drain plans being made on the farm computer and exported to the tractor pulling the drainage machine.
