Controlled Traffic Farming (CTF) is a long term project at Knockothie Farms. CTF is a method of farming that keeps all machines in the field running on the same tracks every year. This means that soil compaction and damage can be minimised and the overall soil condition and yields should improve.
This system aims to get trafficked area of the field down from 85% to below 50%, but requires the use of the ultra accurate RTK GPS signal to ensure each operation drives on exactly the same marks, visible or not. The system also relies on each machine width matching up. The sprayer is the widest machine at 36 metres, if there was a 10 metre machine in the system it wouldn’t fit in the system but a 9 metre machine would (9 x 4 = 36). This means that as new machines are purchased they have to fit into the CTF system.
